Is My House Safe After a Fire?

Posted on January 19, 2022January 19, 2022 by purresadmin

Is My House Safe After a Fire?

According to the National Fire Protection Association, fire departments in the United States respond to a fire every 24 seconds, with around 27%, or over 350,000, being house fires. In addition to over $7 billion in property damage, house fires are responsible for over 2600 deaths and 11,000 injuries every year.

A house fire, large or small, affects your entire house with consequences that can last long after the fire is extinguished. In addition to property loss, water damage, and hidden structural damage, the smoke from even a small fire can pose risks to you and your family’s health.

With Fire Comes Water Damage

After a fire, it is typically apparent what household items are damaged beyond repair, but there may also be hidden damage that can lead to other problems. Often a small fire is contained to a specific appliance, such as a microwave, but nearby items may also show noticeable heat or fire damage. Scorched or burnt countertops, cabinets, walls, and damaged fixtures will usually have to be removed and replaced. Odors from smoke and soot can creep into hidden crevices. If left unattended the odors can wreck havoc for months or years later.

If you or the fire department used water to extinguish the fire, a large area of the house is likely to be thoroughly soaked. Areas drenched with water will need to be dried or cleaned before mold begins to grow. Mold makes the cleanup and restoration more difficult and expensive to complete and poses additional health risks.

Smoke and Soot Damage

While direct damage from a house fire is visible, one of the most dangerous and often unseen aspects of fire is smoke damage. When your house endures a fire of any size, smoke billows from the source and spreads everywhere.

Even a small appliance, or kitchen fire, can spread smoke to every room of the house. Smoke naturally travels to cooler areas and will move throughout your house, finding every opening, regardless of how small. As the smoke moves through your house, it will stain everything in its path and leave an unpleasant odor behind.

The penetrating nature of smoke and soot is what makes it so difficult to remove. You can wash your blinds, clean your walls and other surfaces, but smoke will penetrate deep into unfinished wood, insulation, and other porous materials in your house.

Smoke will also find its way into vents, ductwork, and throughout your HVAC system. The tiny particles of smoke and soot can linger for months, creating an unseen health hazard that can irritate your lungs and even cause permanent damage. This is why having a Master Fire and Smoke restoration company like Pursuit Restoration help you remediate your property.

When a house fire occurs, a variety of chemicals are released into the air. Everyday items found in your home, such as plastics, carpets, foams, fabrics, and other synthetic products, release toxic and deadly chemicals into the air when burned. Even if you cannot see the smoke, there will still be tiny particles released, which are the most dangerous.

Smoke from a fire can cause several health issues even after the thick, heavy smoke is gone.

  • Breathing Issues: Smoke can cause shortness of breath, coughing, bronchitis, asthma, and lead to other respiratory issues.
  • Skin Conditions: The byproducts of smoke and soot are severe skin irritants that can leave your skin dry and irritated. Clothing exposed to smoke can cause skin issues even after washing.
  • Eye Irritation: Getting smoke in your eyes will cause them to tear up and turn red almost instantly. Since smoke damage is often invisible, this irritation may not start immediately but occur over time.
  • Long-Term Health Risks: In addition to breathing issues, skin conditions, and eye irritation, smoke can lead to long-term health issues, including cancer, stroke, heart attack, and is especially dangerous for infants and small children.

How Do You Get the Smell Out of the House?

The composition of smoke is extremely complex, penetrating surfaces and often leaving a greasy film, making it particularly difficult to remove. Removing the smell of smoke from your house requires specialized cleaning equipment and techniques to ensure the complete removal of the smell and associated health risks.

While smoke seems to dissipate quickly, it is incredibly invasive and presents a significant health risk. While it may be tempting to remove smoke damage yourself, it is easy to overlook hidden areas such as your HVAC system and components.

Pursuit Restoration has the equipment, knowledge, and skill to remove soot and smoke byproducts from your house entirely. Our team of experts uses various techniques, including hydroxyl treatments to deodorize and neutralize odor-causing molecules, which is designed to eliminate the odor while still being able to occupy the property.

Can I Sleep in My House After a Fire?

While you may assume that once the fire is out and most of the smoke has cleared, it is safe to return, that’s not true. Even after the visible smoke is gone, microscopic smoke particles will remain, posing immediate and long-term health risks.

Many of the synthetic materials used in construction and home furnishing release harmful chemicals that quickly and deeply penetrate your lungs, causing respiratory issues that can be long-term and even fatal. Regardless of the size, location, or cause, it is not safe to sleep in your house after a fire until the smoke damage is removed.

Driven Cycling Academy

Posted on April 7, 2021May 25, 2021 by purresadmin
Driven Cycling Academy

Driven Cycling Academy

We would like to recognize Driven Cycling Academy which is ran by local BMX Pro Jeff Upshaw. The Treasure Valley is very LUCKY to have a mentor/teacher of the sport.

BMX is a competitive sport that all ages can join! It is a blast to see the 60+ cruiser classes! Nothing is more satisfying than watching the strider riders as young as 1 and 2 years old riding!

Currently we have 2 tracks in the valley, Eagle park BMX and Caldwell BMX. USA BMX runs the events, and keeps track of points for every rider.

We had the opportunity to interview Coach Jeff and ask some questions.

  1. How long have you lived in the Treasure Valley area?

I moved to the Treasure Valley September of 2017. Going on 4 years this September.

  1. Where did you live prior to the Treasure Valley?

I have maneuvered around to find my place to excel in the sport. I moved here from sunny San Diego where I lived for 2 years prior, training for the 2016 BMX Olympic team.

  1. How long have you been racing BMX?

November 9th will be my 27th season.

  1. How did you get involved in BMX?

My father was a D.A.R.E officer in the military. He did some research about BMX for a project he had made out for his D.A.R.E program attendees, the goal was to come up with non traditional sports for the youth to get involved in. We went out to a BMX track prior to my 7th birthday and I have been hooked ever since.

  1. Do you mind explaining what BMX stands for? For those who may have never heard of it?

BMX stands for Bicycle Motocross

  1. What was the most exciting or thrilling BMX event you have been a part of?

I would have to say the 2013 USA BMX grand Nationals

  1. What made this event the most exciting event?

In 2013 I was going through a very tough time. Things started heading in a better direction for me leading up to the Grands. However, earlier that year my father had been diagnosed with stage 4 cancer. We unfortunately said our final good byes just a few weeks prior to the Grands and that race was my first race with out him being on the side lines or even just a phone call away. I never questioned going though as I know BMX is what my father always wanted for me. It was even more special to me because my mother—who normally doesn’t like to travel, attended that race weekend. We traveled there together and had a great time. I ended being on the podium on day 1 and got the over all win on day 2. I shared the stage with my mom and got to say a few words about my dad. Definitely a day to remember.

7a. Is BMX a safe sport for the Treasure Valley Youth?

Yes, There is a lot of positives that come from the sport of BMX. At the BMX track you get to put on a helmet and become your own character. It is a individual sport so it helps the rider find their identity through hard work, dedication and overcoming adversity day in and day out. No one sits the bench in BMX, you get rewarded based on how much effort you put in—such as life. Self development is built on 2 wheels and a BMX track. The kid who would get picked on at school because he may not have fit in with a specific group, fits right in at the BMX track. We all share the same passion and that’s to become better at our craft.
  1. How could the youth start BMX racing?

If you are looking to get started In BMX I would recommend you to come on out to the local track (Eagle park BMX or Caldwell BMX) to check it out. While at the track you will find families and local track members to help you along your journey. The community is very helpful and loving.

  1. How often could the youth race?

In certain Parts of the country you can race up to 2-5x a week. Here In Boise we have a pretty full schedule with racing being 2-3 a week (Wednesday evenings, Friday nights) and practice running Monday and Tuesday between both tracks.

  1. Would you mind explaining what Driven Cycling Academy does for the youth?

Driven Cycling Academy is a program to help riders learn how to be prepared for competition day. We use a group style training format where riders get to compete against there team mates who are similar in skill level week in and week out. This program has been known to build bonds and friends ships as well as helping those riders gain confidence and trust into the process of becoming who they desire to be in the sport. Riders have 2-8 days a month of in person training with me and also a training app with home work to help them be ready for the test (Race day)

  1. How many youth are currently on the team?

Driven consists of 3 programs. Development, National and Elite. The development program has youth riders from the age 6-15 currently. The national team has riders from the age 9-48. The Elite portion of the program is set up for those rider who are considered graduated expert riders, ages ranging from 13-23. Each program is based on the needs desired at the time you sign up.

  1. Does the Driven Cycling Academy program help build confidence?

It does. As well as communication, trust and the ability to believe in yourself and to help encourage those around you

  1. Can anyone join the team?

Not just anyone can join the Driven team. There is a few things that we look for when choosing riders to join the program such as, committed, respectful, and humble riders willing to learn. The rest of the tools can be taught once those traits are found

  1. How would one interested find out more information?
You can email us at DrivencyclingAcademy@gmail.com for now. Website to come in the upcoming weeks…  https://www.drivencyclingacademy.com/

We had the opportunity to speak with some of the riders on the Driven Cycling Academy team. The following are questions and answers for a few of the Expert riders. In order to become an expert you must first win 10 Novice wins, then 20 Intermediate wins. This shows the levels of bmx  each person can attain in the USA BMX.

Common Restoration Questions

How Does the Water Damage Restoration Process Work?

The first step is to remove standing water from flooring, wet carpet and other affected materials. Once all the water is removed, dehumidifiers, air movers and other specialized equipment are used to dry the affected area. This typically takes 2 to 5 days, depending on but not limited to saturation time, type of materials and atmospheric conditions. We use moisture meters and thermal imaging cameras to determine when your home is thoroughly dry.

How Long Should the Water Cleanup Take?

Full restoration consists of two major phases. The first, mitigation, consists of demolition, cleaning and drying the structure. This phases typically takes 2 to 5 days. The second phase, repairs can take anywhere from a couple days to 4 weeks depending on the degree of damage and lead time for materials. Certain materials like Cabinets, Custom Wood, High End Floorings can take extended time to ship. We will work with and your insurance provider to get your property back to normal as quickly as possible.

How Much Does it Cost to Fix Water Damage?

The cost of water damage cleanup depends on the size of the flooded area and amount of time needed to handle the water repair. If your insurance policy covers the water damage you are only responsible for your deductible. The average water loss is just over $7,000. When properly dried in a timely manner you can prevent secondary damages or more costly issues, like mold.

What are the Different Categories of Water?

  1. Clean water – Category 1 – Poses no harm to people. This includes water damage caused from any fresh water supply, water heater, sink overflow, appliance malfunction.
  2. Gray water – Category 2 – Can cause harm and illness to people. This includes water damage which has significant amounts of contamination, biological, chemical, or physical.
  3. Black water – Category 3 – Can cause severe harm or illness to people. Black water is highly unsanitary and contains pathogenic agents. Black water typically comes from beyond the trap, sewage backups, ground water, etc.

Can Water Damage Cause Mold?

Water damage certainly has the potential to cause mold growth. Mold thrives in moist environments with any moisture, especially high humidity areas. In order to keep energy efficiency, modern homes are insulated to reduce loss of energy. This also allows for moisture to stay hidden and not dry if not inspected properly.

Can Water Damage be Hidden? If so, What are the Signs?

Water damage is most often hidden. Some common signs of water intrusion are paint peeling, MDF base swelling, particle boards swelling, condensation, musky odors, damp or wet carpet, etc.

Tony and Victoria were great to work with. They responded quickly to our call and set up an appointment to come to the house within 48 hours. They walked me through the “why” of our water damage and the “how” to fix it and prevent further damage. They were always on time , clean, friendly, and professional. When they finished their work our wall looked like nothing had ever happened. We will use them again in the event we need more restoration work done.

Tony and Victoria are just great people to deal with! I had a water issue and they handled it promptly and professionally. They give you a time that they will be there and show up exactly on time. All work is done professionally and thoroughly. They clean everything up thoroughly and take any trash away. I would highly recommend them!

If I could give this company 10 stars, I would! They came out the very next morning after I contacted them to look at some issues that cropped up on my home inspection report. When Tony & Victoria arrived, they were professional and considerate of my home being in a 'staged-to-sell' state (they were very clean!). Tony walked through the issues I requested them to look at (molding in attic, efflorescence in the basement, acoustic ceiling tiles) and assured me they could handle everything quickly! And they were right! I showed them a copy of the home inspection report and found out they were able to restore much more than I had originally thought. They rebuilt a crumbling chimney, cleaned out my gutters, re-taped some HVAC duct work and I can't even remember what else. It was like a one-stop shop and I couldn't be happier with the quality of service, timely response and respect I was treated with. Highly, highly recommend their services! I asked for a stack of cards to give away to friends :).

Out of the 3 places I called Pursuit was the first to respond, took care of business and were professional. Thank you Tony and the Pursuit Restoration team!
